Interspecific competition among terrestrial slugs

چکیده

ABSTRACT Interspecific competition among terrestrial gastropods has previously been considered to have little effect on population dynamics and local distribution. Recent studies, however, demonstrate several cases in which interspecific plays a major role structuring gastropod communities. To explore the general importance of for ecology slugs, we conducted semi-systematic literature review, synthesizing available peer-reviewed relating interactions following: (1) mortality reproduction; (2) activity, movement, feeding growth; (3) habitat use geographical distribution slugs. support also reviewed snails. The body is relatively limited, but survival, reproduction, movement activity clearly demonstrated laboratory experiments different slug species. occurrence seems, be species specific, no negative effects due presence heterospecifics reported many combinations investigated date. Most studies demonstrating between involved interference from few aggressive (mainly Limax maximus as aggressor). In addition, correlative indicated that gastropods, might mediated by competition. Further, well-designed are needed potentially with focus invasive native species, where lack shared evolutionary history niche separation may increase intensity Such experimental produce information implications conservation well management pests, because result extinction vulnerable influence possibility non-native establishing populations new areas.

Density compensation suggests interspecific competition is weak among terrestrial snails in tabonuco forest of Puerto Rico

—In the Luquillo Experimental Forest (LEF) of Puerto Rico, composition of terrestrial gastropod assemblages exhibits little temporal variation, even in response to intense hurricanes. One might therefore expect snail assemblages to be equilibrial and structured by interspecific interactions such as competition. If competition is strong and persistent throughout an assemblage, then it should man...

The Mechanisms and Consequences of Interspecific Competition Among Plants

During the past 100 years, studies spanning thousands of taxa across almost all biomes have demonstrated that competition has powerful negative effects on the performance of individuals and can affect the composition of plant communities, the evolution of traits, and the functioning of whole ecosystems. In this review, we highlight new and important developments that have the potential to great...

Intra- and interspecific competition among coexisting lotic snails

The competitive interactions of two lotic snails, Elimia cahawbensis and Elimia carinifera, were examined in a second-order spring-fed stream. We first demonstrated food limitation in laboratory microcosms where snails grew faster when exposed to enhanced periphyton levels. We then tested the magnitude and relative strengths of intraand interspecific competition in similar stream and laboratory...

Interspecific competition underlying mutualistic networks

Multiple classes of interactions may exist affecting one another in a given system. For the mutualistic networks of plants and pollinating animals, it has been known that the degree distribution is broad but often deviates from power-law form more significantly for plants than animals. To illuminate the origin of such asymmetry, we study a model network in which links are assigned under general...

Species Introduction and Replacement among Mosquitoes: Interspecific Resource Competition or Apparent Competition?

Mechanisms by which an introduced container-dwelling mosquito, Aedes albopictus, may cause declines in a resident container-dwelling mosquito, Aedes aegypti, in South Florida were tested using a combination of field experiments and field observations. Field experiment 1 tested which species has a competitive advantage as larvae developing in water-filled tires. Densities and availability of res...
